Tanzania Walking Safari

Walking Safari Holidays in Tanzania

Experience the thrill of observing Africa’s magnificent wildlife on foot while exploring its breathtaking landscapes on a walking safari.

A walking safari is a unique method to enhance your safari experience; it is usually arranged early in the morning or late in the afternoon to take advantage of cooler tropical temperatures. Walking safaris were previously only available in the Selous Game Reserve and Wildlife Management Areas, with limited availability in a few National Parks such as Gombe Stream, Mahale Mountains, Rubondo Island, Udzungwa Mountains, Kitulo, Mt Kilimanjaro, and Arusha (Mt Meru), and were frequently combined with trekking. Walking safaris are now available in Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (including Ndutu), and some Serengeti areas that were previously only accessible via game drives and balloon safaris.

These safaris are guided and usually involve an armed ranger for safety. They are a fantastic supplement to game drives, allowing tourists to learn interesting facts about nature like as birds, reptiles, insects, and the medicinal applications of local plants—information that might otherwise be overlooked in a safari vehicle. The scents and sounds of the African bush on foot offer an additional depth to the journey, especially if the walk brings you into wildlife zones where encounters with freely ranging animals are common, such as the Selous, Ngorongoro (including Ndutu), and Tarangire. Walking safaris are the purest kind of safari, immersing you in the natural world rather than observing from a distance. This method provides an amazing and unique safari experience.

It’s a chance to feel a deeper connection with nature and appreciate the unique beauty of Tanzania’s landscapes in a way that’s both personal and profound.

When to go

Dry Season

June until October Best time for wildlife Walking Experience

This is typically the optimal period for walking safaris. The weather during these months is cooler and more comfortable, which enhances the experience of exploring on foot. Additionally, the reduced foliage and concentration of wildlife around water sources make animals easier to spot, increasing the chances of successful sightings.

Green Season

March until May Ideal for Walking safari experience

During this time, the landscape transforms into a lush, verdant paradise. This period is ideal for birdwatching and observing young animals, as many species give birth during the rainy season. However, be prepared for frequent showers, which can make walking safaris more challenging due to muddy and slippery conditions.
